Brandi Carlile - "A Case Of You"
First, let me say that this live version is nowhere near as clean and clear as the live version she recorded on the Howard Stern Show for Sirius XM. If you can watch/listen to that one, please do. Now on to the music.
Today’s heart-wrenching throwback is a perfect, crystal clear cut into our hearts. On a day where 13 people have been senselessly gunned down, around the corner from my house, where one of our last bastions of democracy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, falls and breaks a rib, where the skies themselves know where are hearts are at and cover us in a blanket of cold, wet, gray skies, this song sings so beautifully true to the small sun filled memories we hold close to our souls.
Joni Mitchell is an iconoclast. She will never not be relevant. Her ability to take important themes, either political or personal, and make the resonate with the listener is something most artists would die for. Here Brandi Carlile takes a delicate homage to Joni, giving it all the right tips of the hat and just a few moments of her own making. A perfect cover.
So today, with the sky wrapping me like a cashmere blanket, I choose Brandi Carlile’s version of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case Of You” as my, live your own little truth, see the greater picture, be kind, song for a, hold on to the good parts, remember where your heart belongs, never let them tell you that you aren’t who you thought you were, Thursday.
