M. Tennyson - "Spark"
I am honored to be surrounded by magical beings. Creators of universes and realities that make the world a better place and make me want to be a better human. M. Tennyson is that kind of man. His wild passion for life, his alarming ability to shift from wild enthusiasm to startling vulnerability, his childlike sense of wonder, they are the pillars of his personality and it comes through beautifully in his music.
This song is a special kind of mood, with trippy, intoxicatingly-lush musing, chords, lyrics that take you on a journey and harmonies that make you want to close your eyes and sway. Created when he was at a crossroads of sedimentation vs. change, he chose growth and that has made all the difference. “Life’s about change and nothing ever stays the same,” country legend Patty Loveless sings in one of her ballads, and that mentality hums through this explosive spark of a song.
When he turned 30, that’s when life reminded him of the need to change. He explains, “[This song] is about that moment of recognition in our lives where we realize, in the quiet of our stillness, that change is truly possibly.” And so, he made some changes, reassessed his priorities and was reborn in a pretty enlightened way. “Spark” is an illuminating and timely confession, chiseled in effervescent and glowing synths, allowing his vocal to shatter the static and come clean. The song samples his forthcoming Boy Untitled EP, which accompanies his five-part, fully-illustrated book called A Wanderer’s Love Letter to the Universe.
So today, looking forward into the great wild unknown, I choose M. Tennyson's "Spark" as my, day tripping, crystal vision, sip & twirl, song for an, explosion of full fantasy [redacted], be exactly who you are at any given moment, do not fear to let things go - for only then can you accept what is new, Friday.
Tennyson will perform the entire EP at his June 16 show at NAVEL in downtown Los Angeles. Danny Dolan choreographs. Details here.
